Background of the study
Adult education plays a critical role in socioeconomic development, particularly in regions where formal education opportunities have been limited. In Birnin Kebbi, Kebbi State, traditional adult learning programs often struggle with low participation rates and engagement due to time constraints and literacy challenges. A mobile-based multimedia learning system can provide flexible, accessible, and interactive educational resources tailored to adult learners. By integrating video tutorials, interactive quizzes, and digital textbooks into a single platform, the system offers a self-paced learning environment that accommodates varied learning styles (Adeola, 2023). Moreover, multimedia content can simplify complex concepts, enhance retention, and motivate learners through engaging visuals and audio feedback. With mobile devices becoming increasingly widespread, even among rural populations, such a system has the potential to bridge the educational divide and empower adult learners with skills for personal and economic development. Despite its promise, challenges remain regarding technological accessibility, digital literacy, and the affordability of mobile devices and data. This study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of the mobile-based multimedia learning system by assessing learner performance, user satisfaction, and the system’s impact on adult education outcomes in Birnin Kebbi. The research will also explore infrastructural and socio-cultural factors influencing adoption and propose strategies for sustainable implementation (Ibrahim, 2024; Chinaza, 2023).
Statement of the problem
Adult learners in Birnin Kebbi face significant barriers in accessing quality education due to traditional, rigid learning modalities that do not align with their lifestyles. Many adults lack the time or resources to attend conventional classes, and the limited interactivity of current programs contributes to low retention and completion rates. Although a mobile-based multimedia system promises flexibility and engaging content, its potential is undermined by issues such as limited network connectivity, high costs of mobile data, and a lack of technical support. In addition, varying levels of digital literacy among adult learners further impede effective use. These challenges result in suboptimal learning outcomes and continued educational disparities. This study seeks to systematically evaluate the effectiveness of the mobile-based multimedia learning system, identify the technical and operational challenges that restrict its success, and recommend measures to enhance its usability and accessibility for adult learners (Ibrahim, 2024; Adeola, 2023).
Objectives of the study
To assess the impact of the mobile-based multimedia learning system on adult learners’ academic performance.
To identify technological and infrastructural challenges affecting system usage.
To propose strategies for improving accessibility and engagement in adult education.
Research questions
How does the mobile-based system influence learning outcomes for adult learners?
What technical and infrastructural challenges impede its effective implementation?
How can the system be optimized to enhance accessibility and user engagement?
Significance of the study
This study is significant as it provides empirical insights into the role of mobile-based multimedia learning in adult education, potentially guiding policymakers and educators in addressing digital literacy gaps and infrastructural challenges. Improved learning outcomes can empower adults economically and socially (Adeola, 2023; Ibrahim, 2024).
Scope and limitations of the study
The study is confined to adult education programs in Birnin Kebbi, Kebbi State. Limitations include network connectivity issues, variability in digital literacy, and financial constraints related to mobile device access.
